Moambe chicken – Democratic Republic of Congo

Moambe Chicken, also called Poulet Moambe, is a simple but delicious Congolese dish made from chicken smothered in tomato and peanut sauce. Also known as Moambe Nyembwe, it is the national dish of “both Congos” (the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo), but it is also popular across Central Africa. Interestingly, Moambe chicken is also considered the national dish of Angola (moamba de galinha) and Gabon (Poulet Nyembwe).

“Moambe” and “Nyembwe” means “palm butter”. In fact, the original recipe foresees the use of red palm oil, which is made from the fruit of the African oil palm.

Today we present this appetizing dish, alongside one of the countries where it originates from: the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
