International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace provides a chance to commemorate the good impact that sport and physical exercise play in communities and people’s lives across the world. The theme of The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2022 is “Securing a Sustainable and Peaceful Future for All: The Contribution of Sport”. The aim of 6th April 2022 is to raise awareness on how sports can be used as a tool to advance sustainable development and human rights.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2022 aims to highlight the unique ways in which sports display leadership. Due to its global nature, sports has the ability to incentivise action beyond the sporting sector and amplify awareness among its billions of spectators, facilitators and participants. Through both direct and indirect action, the sports industry must take responsibility for its carbon footprint and engage in a climate-neutral journey in line with Sustainable Development Goal 13 which focuses on climate action.

Sports have the potential to change the world. It is a fundamental right and a powerful tool that can strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development, peace, solidarity and respect for all. With a pressing need for urgent climate action growing each day, the relationship between the climate and sports need to be better understood. Additionally, ways of developing policies and initiatives for concrete action to help reverse the impact of climate change through the means of sport must be communicated to as wide an audience as possible before the situation becomes irreversible.

The CD4Peace Team takes this opportunity to remind us that now more than ever, there is a pressing need to overcome our differences and unite as one team working together to tackle these obstacles and create a safer, more peaceful, and more sustainable future for all.
